TRIBUTE TO THOSE WHO SERVE

By Chuck Klein

(Published 30 Mar 08, Brown County [Ohio] Press)

During this Presidential election year, as the rhetoric degenerates to name-calling, false accusations and out and out hatred, perhaps it’s time we reflect on who we - American citizens of all colors, races, religions and party affiliation - really are. We all have the same goals, only different courses to achieve them. Only in America do Democrats and Republicans, side by side, serve each other and each other's compatriots.

*******

Memorial, Veterans and Independence;
Are American tear producing days;
When we honor our soldiers;
Past and present;

We are so blessed;
To have such patriotic citizens;
Who have unselfishly "served" this country;
So many times.

But right here on our soil;
And in highly visible positions;
Are others of every affiliation;
Who "serve" this great nation.

Everyday our first line of defense;
Our police officers and firefighters;
Unflinchingly "serve" at risks;
That cost some their livelihood, and lives.

There are, of course, far more;
Who "serve" America and Americans;
Monetarily and via countless philanthropic groups;
That contribute to our common good;

Complementing these benevolent associations;
Is a multitude of unorganized volunteers;
Who quietly "serve" at hospitals, libraries;
And the vast number of eclectic, charitable fund-raisers.

America is unique;
Inasmuch as this cadre of unpaid citizens;
Take such good care of each other;
That the impersonal socialization;
Found in other countries;
Is not needed here.

Many decent, law-abiding citizens;
The over-whelming majority of Americans;
Also "serve" their country:
By challenging unjust rules, standing up to wrong-doers;
Or facing down bullies.

If warfare ever threatens our front door;
There should be no doubt that our neighbors;
The ones who keep and bear arms;
Will stand back-to-back and shoulder-to-shoulder;
To tender their "service."

May God bless America and every American;
Where ever they may be;
And in whatever capacity they may "serve."

IT'S A MATTER OF TRUST
Chuck Klein © 2002
Published in Gun Week Magazine

I'm a single issue voter - but that lone subject is indicative of what the perspective office holder thinks of me. I find it difficult to trust members of the Democratic Party whose long term goals have become an on-going agenda to restrict, control and confiscate firearms. In other words, if Democrats don't trust me, a law-abiding, trained citizen, with the basic constitutional right to protect myself and my family then they clearly cannot be trusted with other matters of importance. There are, of course, exceptions to every rule, but John Kerry is not one of them.

This is not to say that I support the full Republican party platform. I, for example, believe that stem cell research should be exploited and Roe v. Wade was a good decision. The world, at least for me and my family, will go on whether abortion, stem cells or other such issues are in force or not. All of those subjects are matters of personal opinions and have nothing to do with trust and individual security.

The only issue that impacts me and my family's personal safety is the matter of firearm restrictions. A candidate, such as John Kerry, who has sworn allegiance to a political party that has historically - law-by-law, edict-by-edict - worked to eliminate the means of self-preservation should not be elected to a position of power.

There's lots worse things than being killed by some thug - one is: watching a family member die at the hands of this thug because you were too much of a fool, or coward to own a gun - a tool Democrats don't trust you with.

THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE
with Annotations

Chuck Klein, © 2005

Published in LINES OF DEFENSE, Police Ideology and the Constitution (2000).

THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE "...should be rendered by standing at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. When not in uniform men should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Persons in uniform should remain silent, face the flag and render the military salute." (36 USCS #172).

The current version of this most sacred of American commitments [with annotations], reads:

I Pledge Allegiance

I [me, personally] pledge [promise as an oath, vow] allegiance [loyalty, duty, devotion]

to the Flag of the United States of America,

to the flag [the symbol, the representation] of the United States of America, [50 states joined together as one people]

and to the Republic

and to the Republic [a nation that lives by the rule of law]

for which it Stands,

for which it [the Flag] stands, [not only do we pledge our allegiance to the flag and the Republic, but we promise our loyalty and devotion to the principals on which this Republic is founded],

One Nation Under G_d,

one nation [united as a single people] under G_d, [a supreme being],

Indivisible,

indivisible, [we will not be divided against ourselves. Facing all enemies we stand together - back to back, shoulder to shoulder, rich to poor, liberal to conservative],

With Liberty and Justice for All.

with liberty [freedom, sovereignty, emancipation] and justice [equality, fairness, truth, adherence to the rule of law] for all [every one who is within our power to protect].
